Honda Fit Hybrid Preview

It may not be officially introduced until the 2010 Paris Motor Show next month, but Honda is planning on releasing a new Fit hybrid car.

The Fit will have a new gas-electric version and it is getting a lot of press. The "Jazz" as it's called overseas, became one of the fastest selling Honda's on the road.

Starting next year you could be the proud owner of a green Fit hybrid. This new Honda hybrid will use the same powertrain as the auto maker's Insight hybrid model. The new hybrid will have a 1.3-liter I-4, a continuously variable transmission, and an electric motor between the two.

According to Honda, the Fit hybrid will boast 98 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque, which isn't far off from the 117hp and 106 pound-feet from the Fit's standard 1.5-liter I-4.

The Fuel economy and emissions figures aren't official, but reports suggest it will perform close to the Insight's 40/43 mpg (for city/highway) EPA rating.

This is a great improvement on the 28/35 mpg rating earned by a non-hybrid Fit with an automatic transmission.

There isn't an official price yet but we expect to have that after the Paris Motor Show. There are rumors the new hybrid will start with a base price of roughly $17,800.
