Honda Plans on Plug-ins for 2012

Honda wants to reach another benchmark by 2012. They hope to achieve this by creating a full line up of plug-in (electric) vehicles for that model year.

The Japanese motor company is looking to raise the ratio of hybrid vehicles to 10 percent or more of total production by 2015. The car maker already hopes to have several electric vehicles going within two years.

Honda has only announced plans to sell a battery-run electric car in the United States simply to meet legal requirements in California, arguing their batteries were too expensive to be practical.

On the opposite side of alternative fuels, Honda has been a strong proponent of hydrogen fuel-cell cars as the best zero-emission alternative to today's combustion engine cars. However, the infrastructure hurdles are even bigger than for plug-ins.

As part of its aim to reduce CO2 emissions across all its products, Honda said it was also developing a new two-wheeler to compete in China's electric bicycle market, estimated at more than 20 million units a year.

Other steps the Japanese auto makers will take to lower carbon dioxide emissions include the launch of a new small diesel model in Europe, along with revamping its gasoline engine and transmission line-up to improve fuel efficiency of its fleet.
